This term, we have been learning about the environment. Yesterday, Room 1, 4 and 5 went on a trip to Kitekite falls to explore the area and learn more about the New Zealand bush.

For the past few weeks, Room 5 has been writing information reports on the adaptation of desert animals. Students chose to write on the penguin, desert tortoise, fennec fox or the camel.
Adaptation of Camels
Adaptation is when living things adapt to the unique conditions of the deserts or any other type of environment. This happens when the animal or living thing needs to change to survive. When something starts to adapt to something, it could take up to thousands of years. Adapting to a living condition is not a simple concept. The desert has different animals which all have at least one thing that allows them to live in the desert, for example a Jack rabbit has their long ears so they use them as their fan. A Camel, has long eyelashes to keep any sand out of their eyes.
Every continent has at least one desert, which is either a cold desert or a hot desert. Hot desert’s only have a scarce amount of water which is also hard to find because water only comes once a year in a ordinary desert. The Sahara desert is the hottest desert in the world, this desert can go up to 50°c in the summer, but then this means that it can drop to - 50°c in the winter. One third of the earth’s surface is covered in vast deserts, and approximately 9 of those deserts are hot deserts.
Camels have smartly adapted to their environment, they have long lashes to block the sand out of their eyes and they also have the same concept with their ears. Additionally camels have thick pulp lips to prevent them from getting hurt when they eat prickly plants. Also the sandy colour of their skin that they have, helps them to camouflage when they see predators. They also store fat in their humps instead of water, many people believe that they actually store water but they are definitely wrong. To elaborate on this, the camel has similar ways of how it works, like how it is basically covered in “light” fur
Adaptation is when a animal of any sort has been fixed to the biome that the animal is living in. There are two types of adaptation, one is where you are born with the certain ability to adapt to the area and two is when you learn from your environment and naturally adapt to the environment. A camel adapts over a long period time which is normal for any animal to adapt to. The camel has adapted very well, they have a good amount of adaptations, like how they adapt to having a limited supply of water. They store about 30 gallons in 13 minutes.
Overall deserts are hard to adapt to because of the harsh conditions in that environment. Also camels are very smart animals which have a the ability to be able to cope with the biome. Adapting can take over 100 or even a 1000 years and adapting is a hard process which is a process of mind strength and more.
Penguin information report
Adaptation is when an animal gets use to a new environment. A penguin is a flightless bird that lives in the southern hemisphere. But they are great swimmers they have wet feet so they can swim. When they get cold they like to huddle and sometimes bunch together to keep warm.
Penguins live in cold deserts, a cold desert is like Antarctica. Antarctica is a cold desert because it gets a reduced amount of snow and rain. Penguins live in the antarctic because there is lots of water for them to swim. Also Antarctica is the biggest cold desert and the
Penguins live in the arctic (southern hemisphere). Whenever they get cold they huddle together in groups to keep warm. They have webbed feet so they can swim amazingly. Their wings are shaped as flippers so they can swim properly. They have a lot of fat (blubber) in their body to keep warm.
Adaptation is when a animal or a person gets used to changes like a home or environment. If an animal or person does not adapt they have more chances that they will die.
Overall animals will soon be extinct since most of the animals live in deserts, they will soon be extinct because if they don't adapt they will die. Penguins have a lot of blubber and thick skin so they can stay warm. When they want to hunt for food they push a penguin in the water to see if it comes out again.
The survival of the desert tortoise and its adaptations
Adaptation is the change and difference that an animal makes to try and conquer the conditions and difficulty of living in their environment. The desert is a harsh environment, It's an environment we're water plays a crucial part in the survival of the living animals and plants in the desert. The Desert tortoise is an animal who has made adaptations that suit its body and the conditions of the Desert.
The desert is an arid environment. It's an environment where water is very scarce and valuable. Due to its extremely hot temperature animals find it hard to survive with very little water. Its hot temperature causes problems to living life making them have to adapt to amazing levels. Desert temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees and if there hot enough can go up to at least 80 decrees scorching the environment.
The desert tortoise is a animal with many survival techniques. The desert tortoise can live up to higher than 50 years old. Their thick solid shell shelters there body and protects them from predators. Additionally tortoises can also burrow in the ground also providing shade and protection. Their diet contains wildflowers grasses and cacti. Desert tortoises sometimes like to live in rocky places helping them camouflage like a rock.
The adaptations of the desert tortoises have been very successful. The desert tortoise has adapted to very little water, Being inactive during the day it is able to reduce water loss. When rain falls the desert tortoise digs into the sand and catches rain to drink. Desert tortoises have learnt to utilise use of water and only drink when desperately needed. The urine of the tortoise gets stored in its blood to reduce water loss. When felt threatened it would release it. This can cause death because of so much water being wasted
In conclusion the desert is a arid and difficult environment to live in. The desert tortoise is a very capable animal with many ways to help themselves live under these conditions. Adaptation is a complex complicated idea that has helped all animals and let them adapt to their environment. Overall adaptation is a process that changes animals, plants and people to help them become able to live easier in their harsh environment.
The desert is a dry and boiling environment it is significant that many animals have adapted to such hostile elements. Adaptation is a vital act that includes getting used to new surroundings or habitat. Adapting can take very long to get used to, but one animal which is the fennec fox has a great tactic that helps it survive in the harsh desert. So let's have a journey through the Sahara desert and find out many different facts about the desert and the daring fennec fox.
Deserts are sweltering habitats where water is very rare to find and because of that not much life thrives in the desert. But not only that it is extremely hard to adapt and only a few animals that can survive in such a harsh terrain. The desert takes up 20% of the earth's space! The average temperature in the desert is 100 degrees fahrenheit .
One of the animals that have adapted to living in the desert is the Fennec Fox. The fennec fox is an omnivore and it’s diet is based on plants, fruit, roots, eggs, insects, rodents and small reptiles. They have huge feet so they can keep balance on the sand and not sink into the sand. The fennec fox loses body heat through the ears, helping them keep cool in the hot, desert climate. Its thick, soft, long fur insulates the fox from the desert night time cold and protects it from the hot air during the day. While normally the fennec fox is a solitary animal they form small groups to 5-10.
The fennec fox has successfully adapted to the harsh desert habitats by collecting moisture from the food they eat at night. Their large ears, which are usually 6 inches long (15 centimeters), help dissipate excess body heat on hot days in the desert, and to fan themselves or youngsters. A fascinating fact is about the fennec fox’s feet being able to be used as shovels to dig underground to make dens.
Furthermore, the daring fennec fox has successfully adapted to the harsh habitats of the Sahara desert. Adaption is when something or someone gets used to a change in their surroundings. The fennec fox is an interesting creature and is very smart. Overall the fennec fox has proven to us that that they have astonishing tactics that help them survive in the barren Sahara desert.

Last week the Brazil reading group read about lemon sharks and their ability to regenerate tissue from damage caused by fishing hooks. The Australia reading group researched more interesting facts about lemon sharks and constructed a presentation about lemon sharks.
